Half Dead
“Half Dead” is a 30-minute program “dead-a-cated” to just the live performances of the Grateful Dead.
Dead concerts were events, not just shows. They rarely repeated the same setlist. Songs were rearranged, extended, combined, or debuted on the fly. Rather than leaning on radio singles, they treated deep cuts as equals and often transformed simple songs into wild live vehicles through improvisation.
They welcomed fans to record shows, creating one of the biggest underground music-trading networks ever. Legendary performances spread on cassette and CD long before streaming existed, building a cult following of listeners obsessed with specific nights.
The Grateful Dead took musical risks. Mistakes weren’t hidden; they were part of the adventure. Some nights were musical magic; others were messy. That unpredictability made each show exciting and real.
